Vehicle Description Chassis No.
9288200259 Like all Porsche models since 1965, the 928 had the unenviable task of being sold alongside and compared to the 911.
Not an easy task to be sure, but consider that in addition to this, Porsche had created their new front-engined V8 GT to eventually replace the 911! Porsche, of course, never stated this but the intent was there.
The 928 featured a modern engine arrangement and more power, transporting four people in climate-controlled comfort, enclosed in an aerodynamic aluminum body.
The 928, for all of Porsche's efforts, received the 1978 Car of the Year award, the first sports car to do so.
While the 911 is still with us, the 928, which ceased production in 1995 was certainly not a failure.
It lasted 18 years on its own, a relative eternity in sports car terms.
As expected, those 18 years featured all manner of improvements worthy of Porsche's advanced Weissach development center.
Larger displacement engines with more power, better aerodynamics, wider wheels, improved handling, bigger brakes, and Mercedes-sourced automatic transmissions were added throughout the 80s and 90s.
Over time many 928 owners updated their cars with these components to stay current, and today, to see an early example such as this from 1978 in its original form is a rare sight to behold.
Simply optioned with an additional right-hand mirror and limited slip, this early U.
S.
-market example is finished now as it was produced in January 1978 in classic Grand Prix White with a Green-upholstered interior with beige Pasha velour cloth.
After 45 years it shows an impressive amount of original equipment such as its 16 inch Teledial wheels, both flag mirrors, and a clean, spoiler-less rear hatch.
Eagle-eyed enthusiasts will also notice that within the rare green interior it retains the original Porsche-branded Blaupunkt CR Stereo.
The Recaro seat inserts have been recently reupholstered in their original factory correct specification of Pasha velour cloth as called out on the CoA as 01 Beige Velour, one of the most period-appropriate and iconic seat fabrics to emerge from Style Porsche.
It also features servicing in 2021 that included an oil change, a new water pump, and a timing belt replacement along with a refresh of the air conditioning system.
Additionally, in February of that year the car received four new Michelin Pilot N-Spec tires.
Offered with an owner's manual and Blaupunkt manuals, toolkit, jack, and spare, it will be challenging to locate a 928 to match this early example's originality and the purest vision of Porsche's futuristic front-engined V8 GT.
