ZFF87EXX000242258 During the final round of the 2016 Ferrari Challenge North America at Daytona, Ferrari unveiled their latest eligible contender for the single-marque series - the 488 Challenge.
Celebrating the then-upcoming 25th anniversary of the series which was inaugurated in 1993, the 488 Challenge was the latest in a series of modified road-going GTs for the track that began with the 348 Challenge.
While the 348 was essentially a stripped-down road car with slick tires, each succeeding generation gained more substantial modifications and adopted technological innovations from Ferrari's GT Championship challengers.
For the 488 Challenge, Ferrari applied the lessons learned from their 2016 World Endurance Championship-winning 488 GTE racer, including much of its significantly altered aerodynamics over the road-going variant.
A complete redesign of the front end included a pronounced front splitter and dive planes to increase downforce as well as three bonnet intakes with integrated flaps to vent hot air from the radiators toward the rear and partly over the underbody.
New side vents under the quarter windows now cooled the rear brakes, and at the rear, the massive spoiler was said to be nine percent more efficient than that of the 458 Challenge EVO while also creating a high-pressure area that forced air into the engine intakes below the wing.
This air was fed directly to the mid-mounted 3.
9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 weighing 44 pounds less than the unit in the 488 GTB and featuring specific mapping unique to the Challenge.
These weight savings were combined with shorter gear ratios in the F1 DCT transmission which enabled the car to accelerate from a standstill to maximum revs in fourth gear in just six seconds.
Also aimed at optimizing performance were three manettino dials with the first controlling the ABS, and the other two steering-wheel mounted dials, TC1 and TC2, controlling the intensity of the traction control intervention and how late the TC intervened respectively.
As with all previous Challenge cars, anything deemed non-essential for on-track performance was eliminated, including the sliding windows which were replaced by lightweight plexiglass panels.
This delivery-mileage 488 Challenge, showing just 47 miles at the time of cataloging, has never seen track use and is offered in virtually new condition.
Finished in a metallic silver livery over a black race-prepped interior, equipment includes two Sabelt fixed-back carbon fiber race seats with multi-point harnesses, an OMP fire impression system, air conditioning, a Racelogic track telemetry recorder with cameras, a COOLSHIRT system, and a Motorola radio system.
Also accompanied by a racing suit, this highly usable 488 Challenge is ideal for track days or any number of eligible racing events.
