The first generation RX-7 featured the 12A rotary engine and wedge-shaped styling, while the second generation FC received substantially updated styling and Mazda's updated 13B powerplant.
The third and final generation RX-7, however, would leave the model with an entirely different legacy.
Unveiled in 1992, the FD generation offered exotic looks and new monocoque chassis promoted as offering 20-percent more torsional rigidity over its predecessor.
Offering a curb weight of just 2,800 pounds, the FD delivered strong performance and exceptional handling dynamics, with an RX-7 even claiming Motor Trend Import Car of the Year in 1993.
