013076 The world was first introduced to the W113 generation Mercedes-Benz SL in March 1963.
An extremely popular Mercedes, it combined the fantastic sporting characteristics of the iconic 300 SL with the cruising comforts of the 190 SL to create an icon of the 1960s.
The 'Pagoda' SL's most notable feature is the safety-conscious hardtop with a concave roof, named for its similarities to the Japanese Pagoda, allowing for a spacious cabin and excellent visibility, all while maintaining a strong roof structure.
By 1968, the original 230 SL had been upgraded to the 280 SL, complete with a 2.
8-liter inline six-cylinder.
The engine of this particular 1970 280 SL, chassis number 013076, produced a respectable 168 hp when new.
Today, however, this 'Pagoda' has been reimagined by fitting a 4.
3-liter, M113, 24-valve V8 that produces 275 hp sourced from a 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK 430.
The 35% displacement increase results in a 39% increase in power without changing the handling characteristics, thanks to the V8's all-aluminum construction.
The suspension has been upgraded front and rear, with the rear axle seeing the most significant change.
The rear subframe from the CLK was modified to take the place of the original low-pivot swing axle that significantly reduces the amount of snap, lift-off over steering if pushed beyond its limit.
Over $6,300 was spent since January 2021 to sort out small issues with the car, the biggest of which was to redesign the brake booster and its mount.
Finished in Black over black leather, only subtle upgrades allude to the increased performance lurking within.
The original US-specification headlights have been replaced by the sleeker units found on RoW examples.
Custom 16-inch wheels were made that allowed the use of the classic Mercedes-painted hubcaps while permitting the use of bigger brakes from the CLK to scrub off the newfound speed.
Passenger comfort is improved with the installation of a modern air conditioning system, and the radio has been modernized with Bluetooth connectivity while still maintaining its classic look.
A wonderful combination of old-world design with modern underpinnings, this 1970 280 SL is a unique automobile, one that must be experienced and driven to be truly appreciated.
