WDB2010361F734120 Across the history and many distinct series of touring car series, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) series in the late-1980s to mid-1990s emerges as the zenith.
This period witnessed racing characterized by clashing bodywork, sparking undercarriages, and epic on-track battles waged by Germany's automotive titans, all within the confines of regulations that tempered excessive innovation.
The 1987 to 1992 seasons in particular stand as the pinnacle of the rivalry between Stuttgart and Munich, as Mercedes-Benz attempted to topple BMW and the mighty M3.
At the 1990 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the latest iteration of their DTM challenger, the 190 E 2.
5-16 Evolution II.
Built to legitimize extensive new modifications for DTM competition, the Evo II retained its predecessor's 2.
5-liter inline-four engine and Cosworth Engineering 16-valve twin-cam cylinder heads, now equipped as standard with the previously optional AMG Power Pack which featured hotter cams, a large-diameter throttle body, a high-performance fuel management system, and an improved intake.
The result was a blistering 235 horsepower in street trim and over 350 in the race cars, with larger Brembo four-piston brakes and stiffer suspension incorporated to handle the increased performance.
However, the most significant advancement over the Evo I was also the most obvious - a spectacular aero kit featuring the largest adjustable rear wing ever fitted on a Mercedes sedan.
The fiberglass kit also adorned the Evo II with bulging fender flares, a massive front air dam, and lengthened skirts and rear apron.
Despite protests from BMW and others, the gargantuan-winged Evo II made its DTM debut during the 1990 season's sixth round at the N?rburgring in the capable hands of AMG-Mercedes drivers Kurt Thiim and Klaus Ludwig.
The team overcame early teething issues in the 1990 season to secure their inaugural DTM manufacturer's trophy in 1991, followed by both the driver's and manufacturer's titles in 1992 thanks to the continued development of the Evo II.
Just 502 units of the road-going 190 E 2.
5-16 Evolution II were produced for Group A homologation.
The example presented here, chassis number 4120, is the 112th of 502 produced and is finished in Blauschwarz Metallic over an optional Anthracite leather upholstery.
This particular Evo II was also well-ordered with a full complement of desirable options including factory air conditioning, heated front seats, an electric sliding sunroof, an external temperature gauge, and rear-mounted loudspeakers.
A digital copy of the original German registration document on file shows that the car was delivered new to Germany and initially registered on 7 January 1990.
Documentation resumes in 2020, placing the Mercedes in the United Kingdom under the ownership of British musician and renowned collector Jay Kay.
Registered as EVO11M, subsequent service invoices show that the car was diligently maintained in Kay's stewardship, returning to Independent Mercedes Specialist in Princes Risborough, England on three occasions.
In February 2020, the interior fan and dashboard wiring was repaired, followed by a visit in April 2021 which encompassed replacing the washer jets, license plate bulbs, and heater resistor, rewiring the rear lights, repairing the adaptive front strut damper gaiters, and changing the brake fluid.
Further sorting in September 2021 included testing and repairing the heater and air conditioning system, replacing the passenger-side pneumatic suspension sphere unit, and realigning front passenger-side the door glass.
Mr.
Kay autographed the glove box upon delivery to the current caregiver.
Imported to the United States in 2023, this 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.
5-16 Evolution II stands as a superb and highly original example of Stuttgart's most iconic DTM challenger.
Showing just over 48,500 kilometers at the time of cataloging, this rare homologation special would make an ideal addition to any collection of significant Mercedes-Benz cars.
